Between the Lines

Linear, mathematical thinking
has worn deep grooves in my mind,
the way water
carved the Grand Canyon
out of solid rock.
I want to hop out of the grooves,
to soar above the canyon
and with an eagle’s perspective
view the whole thing
all at once.
I want to remember
that I am not my name
or my job or my story
and I am most of all
not my thoughts.
I am not trying to get
from point A to point B,
fooling myself into believing
that I’ll be happy once I get
where I think I’m supposed
to be going.
My greatest longing
is to know my greatest self,
the majesty that hides
between the lines.
May all beings be free
to know their own majesty.
