Voices

Standard

The voice stayed with me
when the clock struck midnight;
it followed me into the new year.
It was quiet for a few hours,
letting me take in the new year…
But now it is saying, already,
You should be doing more.
You need to make phone calls,
you need to organize your house,
you need to earn more,
you need to plan for the future.
You could end up on the street.
You could lose everything.
Hurry up! No time to lose!

Now I want to know,
whose voice is this?
Of course I want to be responsible,
of course I want to take action,
of course I want to do the right thing.
But I don’t need a tyrant telling me what to do.
I don’t need a frightened, abused inmate
pushing me to be afraid too.
I’m ready for a new voice,
one that says,
Breathe. You’re doing just fine.
Let’s try this now.
You are not alone;
I’ll be with you every step of the way.
Everything is working out just fine.
You are safe.
You can trust me.
I got you.

I’m searching for that voice.
I’m wanting to see what my life will be like
when I listen to it and act from it.
May the voice of kindness rise up within me,
and may my ears and heart and mind
be open to receive its wisdom.

Really Listen

Standard

And then there comes a time
in our healing process
where there is nothing else to be done
except be still, feel, wait.
We can spend so much time
trying to make the painful feelings go away,
but they are there for a reason.
Our feelings speak to us
through the sensations in our body.
If we would learn from them
we must get still and listen…
really listen.

Listen Deeply

Standard

There is no need to dwell on the past,
to try to figure out who’s right
and who’s wrong,
not when this moment
is so richly landscaped
by our current thoughts,
our fabricated perceptions…
Surely there is enough here
to catch our fancy
without having to
exhume and examine
the remains
of something that happened
so long ago
we can’t remember why
we’re trying so hard to remember!
Close your eyes to the past.
There is nothing for you there.
Open your eyes to this moment
for just a moment,
then close them again.
Now, do you see?
That which is timeless
is inside of you,
the eyes inside your eyes,
the ears inside your ears.
Trust the voice that you can hear
only when you become still
and listen deeply.

Listening More

Standard

Halfway through my sit tonight
I began to feel so tired
that it was difficult
maintaining any focus at all.
I decided to listen to my body
and end my sit early.
Still in that place
of calm, relaxed awareness
and still halfway drowsy
I write about listening.
And I wonder what would happen
if I spent more time
listening to life
than imposing my belief system on it.
What would this world look like
if we all listened more than we imposed our beliefs?
How about if we listened more than we worried?
Or listened more than we spoke?
I ask these questions.
Now it’s time to be in that space of listening.
Maybe, if I’m still and quiet enough,
if I go deep enough within myself,
maybe I’ll hear the answers
life has for me.
