A Huge Success

Standard

I taught a meditation workshop today
and only three people showed up.
From a profit-driven business standpoint,
it was a miserable flop,
not worth the time invested.
Luckily, I have access to other standpoints.
So when a young woman approached me
after the workshop, crying,
sharing that she remembered her deceased father
during our lovingkindness meditation,
when she appeared bewildered by her emotions
(even apologized for them),
and when I was able to praise her for her courage
and share with her that it was an honor and a privilege
to bear witness to her process—
I knew something bigger was at play here.
Today wasn’t about me turning a profit,
it was about me touching a life.
It wasn’t about material abundance,
it was about human connection.
It wasn’t about my personal glory,
it was about beholding the radiance
of a sweet soul coming home
after a long time away.

From this standpoint,
my workshop was a huge success,
and I am proud of the work that was done.

Baltimore Curfew

Standard

In Baltimore this week,
everyone needs to listen to their parents
and be home by 10.
It makes me feel like I’m ten again,
having to hurry home
so that my parents won’t worry,
or become angry at me
and punish me with a hefty fine
or incarceration.

Can you imagine having a curfew now,
the adult you, adhering to a curfew?
I think of the business lost
and the opportunities lost
as military men and women
walk around with semi-automatic rifles,
and police in riot gear hold the line
making sure the streets are empty
like they told us they had to be.

What happened world?

What art has slipped away from us
as singers’ lips fall silent
and musicians hands lie idle
at home, in bed,
observing curfew,
indoors before 10?
Which dancers have suffered
with muscled legs begging to move
which actors have uttered
their memorized lines to the wall
with no one to hear at all
wishing to be in the theater on stage
without a curfew imposed no matter what your age?

What would you do,
YOU…
With such a curfew?

Christmas Dogs

Standard

Please accept my apologies
for not posting on Christmas Eve
I was up late
wrapping presents
after making five pairs
of flannel pajama pants
with Christmas dogs on them

When did the holy days become so busy?

It’s 2am now, and I’m tired.
I should say “Merry busymas,”
but I would like to acknowledge
the christened one,
the anointed one,
the holy one
that arrives in the darkest night
with promises of new light

So Merry Christmas, my friends,
in whatever way you celebrate it,
however it means to you.

May the light in you shine out
into the world
bearing the gifts of presence,
of stillness, of peace.
