The Truth of My Deepest Self

Standard

And then I realized
this suffering isn’t
some nuisance to be tolerated…
it’s an opportunity
to dive deep within myself
and learn something.
It’s a chance to trust
that what I’ve been given
is what I’m meant to have
(for now)
and as I shift inside
I’ll see the shifts on the outside too.
It’s a confrontation
with the old, outworn stories,
a chance to rewrite the narrative
into something deeper,
something more beautiful,
more meaningful than before.
And I turn to my higher power,
saying,
Let this be an initiation
into profound understanding.
Let this be a signpost
that I’ve moved into a territory
of authentic feeling.
Facing what arises,
loving what I cannot yet understand,
faithful that whatever brought me here
won’t leave me here to die…
Awakening to what is
and who I am,
seeing the truth of my deepest Self.

I Believe

Standard

I believe in the spark of divinity
that exists in all of us.
I believe in our spark’s potential
to ignite our creative fires,
burning away our fears,
freeing us to bring
our passion, beauty, and light to this world,
forging a stronger, more empowered self
in the flames of our deepest desires.
My mission is to fully awaken,
to make all moments of this one life
meaningful opportunities
to grow and evolve
in awareness of the one self
that pervades all of existence.
But I am human, and sometimes I fail.
So I am grateful to my teachers and guides,
my friends and family,
who lift me up and brush me off
and help me to get on with things
whenever I get stuck.
Shanti shanti shanti.

Fearlessness: The Ultimate Freedom

Standard

Holding on to anything
plants seeds of fear
deep in our consciousness
because on a deep level
we know that everything
we now see
will one day be gone.
Look around you.
None of this is permanent.
Nothing is permanent.
So let go of the grasping,
the naive belief
that you can control
this universe and keep
it the way you like.
There is infinite freedom
in letting go.
Sure, you might say,
I want to let go,
but how?
It isn’t a switch that we flick.
We can’t turn on
this power of letting go.
But we can practice
every day
in little ways.
Sit.
In your mind
visualize the things to which
you are most attached.
Think of the people for whom
you hold the greatest affection.
Acknowledge that one day
we must say goodbye to all of these.
If imagining saying goodbye to a loved one
Strikes terror in your heart,
start small.
Start with your favorite kind
of potato chip,
or your favorite television show.
You don’t actually have to
get rid of them on the concrete level.
Just imagine letting go.
Each letting go
whether real or imagined
contributes to our fearlessness,
the ultimate freedom.

The Way of the Spiritual Warrior

Standard

Become friends with your fear–
it has a lot to teach you
about the way you see the world.
Don’t try to push your anger away–
hold its hand, bring it closer,
ask it some questions,
learn to know it better.
Every little bit of pettiness,
vindictiveness, resentment,
frustration, grasping–
let it all in so that you may learn
a little more about the self.
Finding compassion for all of these little parts,
collecting them back to you,
sitting with these pieces,
not asking them to stay or leave,
but just to acknowledge their presence–
this is the way of the spiritual warrior.
