Ode To My Body

Standard

Dear Body,
I love you.
I’m sorry for taking you for granted.
I know you’ve worked really hard
to keep me alive all these years.
I’m sorry for judging you as inadequate.
I love you.
I am so grateful for all of your sensations
and the wonderful way
all of your systems work together
to maintain radiant health.
I love how elegant you are,
how nimble, how graceful.
I love how you breathe,
how you walk,
how you climb and run and dance.
I love how you rest.
Dear Body,
forgive me for all those times
I didn’t understand
and blamed you for my illness.
I know you are doing the best you can.
You are brave and noble
and I’m glad you’re mine.

My Masterpiece Day

It was a masterpiece day…
A friend encouraged me to go to yoga,
and the teacher was so compassionate
my heart melted in her presence.
Then I nourished my body with a good lunch
and my mind with good conversation…
My friend and I strolled through the woods
right on the cusp of autumn;
already leaves are changing colors
and dropping to the ground.
We waded in a cool stream
and for a moment
I was completely free of
any worry, fear or doubt.
And I remembered,
THIS. This is who I really am.
Yes, it was a masterpiece day,
and I am grateful!

You’re Alive!

This day is a huge gift!
How many people who were alive yesterday
didn’t wake up today?
And yet here you are, reading these words—
isn’t it amazing you can look at these symbols
and your precious brain makes meaning of them
in a way that your heart can be touched
or your body may want to move?
At any moment you might breathe deeply
and settle into stillness,
or you may jump up
and run like crazy.
You can
laugh
cry
sing
shout
dance…
Isn’t it amazing?
You’re alive!

Did You Know?

Standard

The magic is here.
Open your eyes.
Can you see it?
Heavenly fragrance everywhere.
Inhale deeply.
Can you smell it?
The music is being played.
Listen.
Can you hear it?
The rhythm is flowing.
Let your body move.
Can you feel it?
The sweet water cascades upon you.
Open your mouth.
Can you taste it?
You are alive.
Did you know it?

Noise

Standard

After so much spinning noise,
it’s so nice to sit and just be.
But as my body becomes still,
the noise in my head grows louder.
Where is the spinner of noise?
Does she weave a tapestry of many colors?
Does she cackle and croon
and delight in all the textures?
Even in silence there is noise.
Even when my mind is quiet,
the noise continues on,
in the beating of my heart,
in the sound of cars driving by,
the TV downstairs where my husband
is watching a show.
I thought once that I wanted the noise to stop,
but I know better now–
the noise cannot stop.
The day the spinner of noise stops spinning,
so will the great green globe we call home.
So here is to sitting in the center of the spinning noise
and remembering the stillness that hides in the movement
and the sound that is concealed by silence.

Today I Danced

Standard

Today I danced.
It was an ordinary moment
just after lunch.
My son was (thankfully) napping,
my daughter was drawing,
my husband was watering the grass seedlings
and all was quiet.

Yes, just an ordinary moment,
except suddenly it was extraordinary.

Maybe it was the
the brightness of the spring afternoon sun,
the way the flowers were blooming vibrantly,
the way my daughter’s light step
reminded me of one of the fairy folk
who has flitted through my dreams–
and suddenly I needed to dance.

Outside on the patio
next to pots of blooming pansy,
alyssum, begonia, and impatiens
I put on my favorite Scottish band,
the Tannahill Weavers,
music bursting out
from a little Bluetooth speaker
perched on our high brick wall.

The pipes, the guitars, the drums, the vocals
stirred my heart
and then my body
and suddenly I was leaping and swirling
and spinning and whirling
and remembering why I love dancing.
My daughter looked up at me
with such love in her eyes
and told me as I danced
You are my sunflower.
This means I love you.

I kept dancing,
and I felt free.
It is so glorious to be alive.

Expand Into the Infinite Awareness of Now

Standard

You don’t have to wait.
Just do it.
It begins with the idea
then a breath
then a step
Breathe your arms up
then bow to the earth
Inhale to look ahead
and exhale to ground down
Stay put then
Just breathe
Feel the blood flowing into your face and head
Head below heart
Hands and feet on the ground,
rooted, focused
Look forward now,
step your feet to your hands
Inhale to look forward,
your spine long, strong and proud
Exhale to bow to the earth,
Then inhale a big life-giving breath
as you reach for the sky,
YOU’RE ALIVE!
Just move.
Don’t think.
Just move.
And now that your body is awake
senses awake,
mind awake,
whole being energized,
now sit.
Don’t move,
just sit.
And expand into the infinite awareness of NOW.
