Love Yourself Regardless

It’s easy to think highly of yourself
when you’re feeling good
looking good
and everything is going your way.
It’s easy to like the person that you are
when you’re perceiving yourself as successful,
But what happens when the opposite true?
What do you think of yourself
when you’re feeling terrible,
looking terrible
and nothing is going your way?
How do you feel about the person that you are
when you see yourself as a failure
True self-love means
that we can hold ourselves with tenderness
through thick and thin,
that we can be kind to ourselves
even when we’ve blown it,
when we’ve lost it,
when we’re down in the dumps.
This too is a practice.
Cultivating maitri–
feeling unconditional kindness towards yourself,
offering genuine friendliness
to the person you are right now,
this is a most excellent skill.
It is a lifelong journey,
like a good marriage.
And like a good marriage,
it requires forgiveness,
and openness to the great mystery.
If you do no other thing
in this lifetime
except learn how to truly love yourself,
it will be a life well-lived,
because this true love felt within,
can then be radiated as true love
to all beings, lightening the burden of others,
showing them how to be loving as well.
Don’t delay.
Begin again and yet again
as many times as it takes
until one day
you can love yourself

Love Without Conditions

Don’t expect your worst habits
to disappear
as you walk this warrior path.
If anything
they grow stronger
and fight back more fiercely.
They want to regain the ground they lost;
They want to survive.
This is why humor is so vital.
If we can introduce some levity,
if we can smile warmly at ourselves,
nod, recognize where we have
slipped back into the same old pattern–
now we can choose to remain present,
to see ourselves past the old habits
of misinterpretation, misunderstanding,
fear, resistance–
Now we can choose to keep going,
to take another step
as we learn how to love ourselves
without conditions.

To Be Free

It has been a while,
has it not, my friend?
I’m tired,
it’s time for bed.
But I’m searching for meaning
and inspiration
and a way of easing
the sensation
that I’m somehow bound
for eternal damnation.

I stop.

I breathe.

When I remember
that there is nothing wrong with me,
it is then,
dear friend,
I can choose

Why We Meditate

We don’t meditate to become perfect,
we meditate to just be.
What would life be like
if we could sit in such a space
for a little longer?
Where there is nothing to fix,
nothing to change,
to organize,
or to plan,
where there is nothing to prove
and nowhere else to be–
what would life be like
if we could hold such awareness
for just a little longer?
It is possible.
Maybe today our focus lasts for four seconds.
That’s fine.
This is  a start.
Gradually, over time,
our focus might lengthen,
and rising from our cushion,
we might bring this awareness with us
into our day.
the light of your being
illuminating those with whom
you share your daily life.
The inner peace
you found in stillness
stays with you and
brings peace to everyone around you.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves…
there is nothing to be accomplished here,
nothing to be checked off our list,
no one to save, no one to fix.
We don’t meditate to become perfect,
we meditate to just be.
