When You Welcome The Universe

Standard

When you welcome
the Universe as lover
you dare not be choosy—
you want it all!
And rightfully so,
to say yes to some of it
and no to the rest
means that you don’t
accept the whole Universe.
It means that you’ve
held yourself apart
from some precious
experience,
a joy hiding inside a lesson.
Scrub the toilet
with the same
excitement you feel
when you kiss
your beloved’s cheek.
Everything becomes joy
when the whole Universe
is your lover.

The Universe Laughs Last

Standard

The Universe is a jokester,
its arms lightly crisscrossing
its abdomen
doubled over in laughter
pointing at me…
bellowing bawdy guffaws
AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!
Slapping its thigh,
so satisfied with itself.
Every time I think I get it,
I learned the lesson,
I figured it out,
something else happens,
and a big neon sign flashes
right in front of my eyes,
SURPRISE!
And I’m standing there,
mouth hanging open,
eyes blank,
WAIT, WHAT?
Looking so foolish.
And that’s how I figured
no one escapes from the game.
I could play smart
or I could play dumb
but I don’t get to sit out.
And the universe always
laughs last.

Sheer Delight

Standard

It is all so simple, really.
We see as much as we are ready to see.
We experience just as much
as we are capable of experiencing.
There is no limit to what we can
learn, make and do,
but we need motivation, desire, and courage
to find the strength necessary for expansion.
It means leaving the safe harbor
and setting sail into the unknown,
being willing to confront our own resistance
to stretching beyond what is familiar,
allowing ourselves to feel the fear of failure,
of looking foolish,
of making ourselves vulnerable—
and just going for it anyway—
knowing that just on the other side
of our comfort bubble there’s
a wide open universe waiting
for us to join it in this perpetual
dance of creation.
We spin out our thoughts
as the cosmos spins out new stars,
totally unaware of our magnificence.
Time to wake up and see what is ours,
to dance the dance consciously,
with joy, devotion, gratitude
and sheer delight!

The Eyes of Your Soul

Standard

For those who are feeling discouraged about their mindfulness practice…

You think this practice is all for naught?
You think you can’t see any results yet?
I tell you, every second matters,
nothing ever goes to waste,
it all counts.
Have faith, trust, believe.
Your binary mind cannot comprehend
the vastness of this Universe,
so why would you look at your practice
through the eyes of this mind?
Close your eyes
go within
be still.
There are no words for what you find
when the eyes of your soul open and see.

Back to Your Center

Standard

It’s finally sinking into my thick skull
that in order to be truly happy,
I need others in my life
and that giving to others
is an act of giving to myself.
To see those around me glowing with happiness
is a greater gift than words can describe,
and to know that I had a part in that happiness–
pure bliss!
It’s a paradox that the more you give away
the more you have,
but this is the way it works
when your heart takes the lead.
Living in the paradox with an open mind
life opens up and hidden mysteries are exposed,
drops of dew glistening in the morning sun,
here and then gone.  Let go of all of it.
What I once thought was real fades away
to reveal something even more beautiful,
graceful, precious and kind,
the way the chrysalis fades away
once the butterfly emerges.
Be still and watch as the world spins around you.
You are the center of your own universe,
a divine creator, more powerful than you could know.
Now, what shall you spin out from your center,
what will you weave into the fabric of your life?
Each day a new thread appears.
Can you follow it back to your center and rejoice?

Leave the Rest

Standard

In the blink of an eye
it all changes.
What you thought
was sad or unfortunate
becomes a blessing somehow.
The storm passes
and with it the anger,
the clouds part
and the sun shines
in your mind once again.
If it all changes so quickly
why take any of it seriously?
Behind the facade of
significance we assign
to each little detail
there is a whole big picture
we cannot see.
Why not trust
that we are where we need to be,
doing what we need to do…
and leave the rest to the force
that keeps the planets in orbit?
